PLAYING POST OFFICE, some companies take the mail into their own hands.
Bothered by slow or undelivered U.S. mail in New York, Cushman & Wakefield, a real-estate firm, hired Maxx Mail Ltd., a private service that picks up mail and delivers it by hand the next day. In Chicago, where piles of ditched letters were found last winter, 21 banks and a few utilities try automatic bill-paying so customer checks aren't ever in the mail. When fast delivery is crucial, outfits like Grimes Travel in New York pay extra, messengering tickets at $7 a trip.
